Schumer is told Arizona won't postpone immigration law
Not a chance.
That is Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer's unofficial response to Sen. Charles Schumer's letter Thursday asking her to postpone the state's tough new immigration law for a year so Congress can pass a comprehensive immigration package.
The governor has no authority to postpone a law, said Brewer aide Paul Senseman.
Besides, he said, "There isn't any interest in postponing it." Brewer already has waited a year for Congress to act on a request by border states for more federal money to fight drug smuggling, increase National Guard patrols on the border and reimburse costs for jailing illegal immigrants.
