Fire Island National Seashore has begun accepting registrations for its biennial Science Conference.

The two-day event to be held during National Park Week includes a day of presentations April 27 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Patchogue-Watch Hill Ferry Terminal. There will be a guided field trip to Sailors Haven and Watch Hill on April 28 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The April 27 program also includes an illustrated program by Robert F. Sayer, a lifelong Fire Island summer resident and author of a new book, “Fire Island — An Environmental History.”

Other programs that day will focus on water quality and algal blooms, salt marsh habitats and bird species, red foxes, box turtles, horseshoe crabs, coastal geomorphology and park management.

The April 28 field trip will allow participants to see four research projects in progress.

The lectures are free but there is a $5 charge for the ferry trip to Sailors Haven and Watch Hill.

Registration is required in advance at 631-687-5030 or by email at FIIS_Science_Conference@nps.gov.
