A scoreboard at a Huntington town park was dedicated Tuesday in memory of a Northport student who died during a lacrosse game.

The scoreboard at Veterans Park in East Northport was donated by the Louis J. Acompora Memorial Foundation, named for the 14-year-old Northport High freshman lacrosse goalie who died in 2000 after blocking a shot with his chest during a game. The impact disrupted the rhythm of his heart, causing his death.

The foundation works to educate schools and other groups about the importance of having on hand automated external defibrillators that can restore the rhythm of the heart. The foundation’s work also led to New York State adopting Louis’ Law, which mandates the devices in public schools and at school sporting events.
