A wave clipped the wing of a seaplane on Saturday morning in the East River before takeoff, causing the aircraft to take on water, according to the NYPD.
Two people aboard the aircraft were rescued and taken to shore on a nearby private boat, police said. No injuries were reported.
The incident occurred just before 9:30 a.m., according to the FDNY, in water near the Throgs Neck Bridge in Queens.
As the pilot started the engine, the wave hit the wing and the plane began taking on water, police said. The plane was never airborne and did not crash, police added.
A resident nearby reported to police hearing a loud noise, which may have led to some confusion that the plane had crashed, an NYPD spokesperson said. The noise, however, was the engine starting.
