A 22-year-old security guard at a bar in Hempstead was shot in the head late Saturday night and remains on a respirator at Nassau University Medical Center, Hempstead village police said Sunday.

Police said that David Mareno was working as a security guard at the El Rancho Bar on Fulton Avenue in Hempstead when the shooting occurred at about 11:20 p.m.

Mareno opened the door of the bar and was shot in the head, police said. They said they did not know of any reason for the shooting.

No arrests were made and police are investigating.

NUMC officials said they had no immediate word on Mareno's condition.
