Former Texas Rangers president J. Thomas Schieffer was hired by commissioner Bud Selig Monday to run the Los Angeles Dodgers, less than a week after Major League Baseball took over operation of the franchise from owner Frank McCourt. Schieffer was an investor in the ownership group headed by George W. Bush and Rusty Rose that purchased the Rangers in 1989.

Diamondbacks 4, Phillies 0:Former Yankee Ian Kennedy threw a three-hitter in the first complete game of his major-league career, outpitching Cliff Lee to end visiting Philadelphia's winning streak at five games. He had come home early from the Diamondbacks' trip for the birth of his first child. Chris Young and Gerardo Parra homered off Lee, who gave up four runs and five hits in seven innings.

Pirates 4, Nationals 2: Brandon Wood's two-run double in his first game for host Pittsburgh was part of a four-run fourth.

Marlins 5, Dodgers 4: Omar Infante lined a two-out RBI single that leftfielder Jerry Sands misjudged in the ninth, capping a two-run rally for host Florida.

Rockies 5, Cubs 3: Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro committed three errors in the second inning in Chicago.

Reds 9, Brewers 5: Jay Bruce hit a two-run homer and Bronson Arroyo pitched effectively into the seventh for visiting Cincinnati, which scored six runs in the third.

Blue Jays 6, Rangers 4: Corey Patterson and Jose Bautista homered on consecutive pitches in the fifth for host Toronto.-- AP
