OTTAWA - Ryan Shannon scored the deciding shootout goal to give the Senators a 3-2 win over the Islanders last night.

Shannon delivered Ottawa's third straight shootout score after Alex Kovalev and Mike Fisher beat Dwayne Roloson. After Frans Nielsen and Rob Schremp scored on the Islanders' first two shots, Pascal Leclaire stopped John Tavares on the Islanders' final attempt.

"Obviously, I want to put that one in," Tavares said. "It just kind of rolled off my stick, and I thought I had him. We pick up a point and move on."

Schremp had given the Islanders a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal 7:55 into the second, but Chris Kelly and Peter Regin scored later in the period to give Ottawa the lead. Jon Sim scored 56 seconds into the third period to draw the Islanders even at 2.

The Islanders' Tim Jackman was taken to a hospital for precautionary reasons to have an eye checked, a spokesman said. After the first-period buzzer, Matt Carkner threw a few quick punches into the face of Jackman, who had checked former Islander Chris Campoli into the end boards as time expired.

"In my mind he was looking to cause some ruckus," Carkner said. "After that dirty hit, if it was me hitting someone like that, I'd be ready. I'd know if someone was coming after me and I'm not going to hesitate about things. I don't want to be dirty, either, but it's one of those situations. I was sure that he was ready, but it's unfortunate that it all had to happen." - AP
