Send holiday wishes to wounded soldiers

The Lynbrook Fire Department is collecting Christmas and holiday greetings for wounded soldiers hospitalized in Maryland and North Carolina.

Lynbrook firefighters, who are part of Nassau County Firefighters Operation Wounded Warrior, are asking schoolchildren to write or draw a Christmas or holiday greeting card to one or more wounded warriors recuperating in military hospitals . Cards written by adults will also be accepted until Dec. 1.

Firefighters are also accepting donations of socks, T-shirts, gym shorts, sweatpants, phone calling cards, bicycle gloves for wheelchair use and toiletries.

The cards and items can be dropped off at Lynbrook Village Hall, 1 Columbus Dr., Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. or at the Lyn Gift Shop on 11 Atlantic Ave. They can also be dropped off at any Lynbrook firehouse on Sunday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon.

The items will be given to wounded warriors being treated in the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., and at Camp Lejeune and Fort Bragg, N.C. Lynbrook and Nassau firefighters plan to drive to those locations the week of Dec. 5.
