Send your deadbeat family packing
DEAR AMY: Does the rule about family always apply when you are being taken advantage of by your son, his wife (who both work) and their four children? I'm a retired grandma (late 60s), divorced, and I own my own home. They have now been here for 16 months. I want to sell the house and move into a retirement area as soon as possible. I have been to a counselor, a pastor and a lawyer and all say my only option is eviction. I have given my son's family notice to move out on Dec. 31. I want to enjoy my retirement, not baby-sit and clean up after all of them.
Tired Grandma
DEAR TIRED: If everyone you trust tells you the same thing, then it's a good idea to follow their advice.
Put your home on the market, make your plans and trust that these working parents will find a way to fend for their family themselves.
DEAR AMY: I am a 19-year-old guy. I have very little social life, and I spend much of my time either playing video games or on my laptop, usually surfing the Internet. I am in college and have a few friends, but outside of school, I hardly talk to them.
I know I can contact many of my friends via phone, text, e-mail or Facebook. I have never had a girlfriend. Is it still possible for me to have a personal relationship with a woman? What can I do to improve my social life?Lonely and Worried
DEAR LONELY: Burying yourself in video games or surfing the Web in your free time provides a place for you to hide. College campuses are great places to join organizations with people who have similar interests. At the beginning of the semester, your school will have an "activities fair," where campus clubs promote their activities. Get involved. Also, use the social aspects of the Internet to communicate with people.
