Seniors can get ID cards in Freeport

Senior citizens in the Town of Hempstead are eligible to receive a free senior ID card Wednesday at the Freeport Memorial Library (144 W. Merrick Rd., Freeport).

The wallet-sized ID card includes a photo and the holder’s personal data, physician’s contact information and emergency contact phone numbers. Allergies and other vital information can also be printed on the cards. The card can be used as a form of nondriver identification and may aid in obtaining senior citizen discounts.

State Sen. Charles J. Fuschillo Jr. (R-Merrick) is sponsoring the program for those 60 and older with Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray and town clerk Mark Bonilla.

“Senator Fuschillo thought it was a very beneficial service for seniors and wanted to partner with the Town of Hempstead in bringing it into the community to help as many seniors as possible take advantage of it,” said Christopher Schneider, Fuschillo’s director of communications.

Hempstead created the free senior ID card program last October and provided the service at the annual senior citizens fair sponsored by Fuschillo, Schneider said.
