1. Remembering 9/11
With the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks looming next week, Long Islanders will take a pause this Thursday to honor the memory of those who lost their lives.
2. Cirque du Soleil
A new version of the avant-garde production that mixes Chinese acrobatics with colorful costumes, "Dralion" draws inspiration from Eastern philosophy that looks for balance between humans and nature -- the four natural elements of fire, air, water and earth are starring themes of the show.
3. 'Sweet Charity' opens
The classic Neil Simon musical that tells the story of a Times Square dancer who falls in love with a regular, down-to-earth guy opens Thursday at John W. Engeman Theater at Northport. Opening-night special: a preshow reception at 6:30 p.m. Thursday with food and a cocktail of your choice ($75 includes premium seat to the show at 8).
4. Linda Eder
The actress and singer brings her latest show, "Songbirds: A Tribute to the Ladies," to the Dina Merrill Pavilion at Guild Hall -- showcasing her voice to music once performed by stage divas including Lena Horn, Etta James, Barbra Streisand and Judy Garland.
5. Nashville legends -- on screen
Freeport archivist Bill Shelley presents rare concert clips and footage from his collection featuring legends of country music -- Johnny Cash, Bill Monroe, Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, Hank Williams, Linda Ronstadt, to name a few -- at the latest installment of his "Rock Legends Live!" series at Cinema Arts Centre.
6. Food, wine and beer party
The Huntington Historical Society hosts a tasting event featuring local wines and craft beers served by Long Island's own Blue Point Brewery. "An Evening Under the Stars" features food samplings from local restaurants including Kashi Japanese, Fado, and Rookie's. Also on the menu are raffle baskets, live music by Peter Mazzeo and The Hit Squad, and an auction. It all takes place at the historic Daniel W. Kissam House Museum.
7. Unusual indoor plants
Have a green thumb -- or want to get one? Learn how to grow indoor plants from items you might normally throw in the trash (think avocado pits, the tops of pineapples) at this one-hour workshop at Old Westbury Gardens that's included with general admission.
8. Outdoor art show
Meet artists and craftsmen to learn about their work and one-of-a-kind creations at a show and sale featuring more than 135 exhibitors. Expect paintings, sculpture and photography along with jewelry and crafts in ceramics, wood, glass and fiber. Want to learn how it's done? Craft demonstrations also will take place along with live music, food and children's activities.
9. North Fork Foodie Tour
It comes but once a year -- the popular all-day self-guided tour that takes you behind-the-scenes of working farms and food producers from Jamesport to Orient. Along the way, you'll meet chefs, winemakers and shopkeepers while visiting their fields and facilities. Highlights include gathering eggs and sampling fresh goat cheese.
10. Creed
From "With Arms Wide Open" to "My Sacrifice," the radio-friendly rock group Creed has a long list of hits. The band will play an intimate show next Sunday at the Paramount in Huntington.
