Thunderstorms bringing dangerous winds could pass through Nassau County Friday evening, Bryan Ramsey, a National Weather Service meteorologist, told Newsday.

A severe thunderstorm watch will remain in effect through 11 p.m. Friday in Nassau, as well as New York City, Ramsey said. Storms could begin as early as 7:30 p.m.

“The primary threat would just be damaging wind, which would be wind gusts in excess of 58 mph,” Ramsey said. There’s “better chances” that the storms will remain west of Nassau County, but the chances are “still strong enough” to warrant the watch, he added.

It's also possible that thunderstorms creep into Suffolk County, but in lieu of dangerous winds, those residents would only contend with rain and lightning.
