Shannon's pinch hit helps Connetquot upset East Islip

Casey Shannon hit a two-out, two-run pinch single in the top of the fifth as No. 15 Connetquot upset No. 2 East Islip, 3-1, in a Suffolk Class AA softball game Friday.

Connetquot second baseman Amanda Schoenfeld started a triple play when she caught a pop in shallow rightfield and threw out a runner at home tagging from third before catcher Amanda Morelli threw out a runner trying to advance from second to third.

Chelsea LaMarca allowed six hits, struck out one and walked one. Bianca Kranz went 2-for-3 and scored a run. Kristie Guarino's RBI single in the seventh made it 3-1. Connetquot (12-9) will play at No. 7 Smithtown West (14-7) in a quarterfinal at 4 p.m. Tuesday. East Islip finishes 19-2.

"The kids are gelling at the right time and they're getting used to having to win ballgames," coach Tom Anziano said. "We had to win our last few games to get into the playoffs, so I told them every game is like a playoff game. They handled the pressure pretty well and they responded to the pressure well today."
