In Shelter Island Monday, a Good Samaritan used his pickup truck to help get a 90-year-old woman on the ferry, allowing her to make it off the Island for medical care before the brunt of superstorm Sandy hit.

In Long Beach Tuesday, seven building tenants who hardly knew each other joined forces to dig out each other’s cars, then commiserated over the experience with a potluck meal of biscotti, bottled water, canned soup and several bottles of wine.

Newsday’s reporters have heard numerous stories over the past few days of Long Islanders coming together in this desperate time.
