I read with interest your photo essay "Hooked on Shelter Island" [LI Life, May 22]. I have fond memories of the Island since I visited often 50 years ago when my relatives built a home there.

However, I was disappointed that no mention was made of a native son, George Glenn Dawson, a retired professor of economics. He is a decorated Navy veteran, having served in three conflicts: World War II, Korea and Somalia, where he spent two years in charge of a Peace Corps facility.

Dawson, formerly of Wantagh, is an octogenarian, a prolific author, writer, poet, historian and what I would call a vanishing American.
