Shelter Island town code to allow dog fine forgiveness

Shelter Island’s town board has approved a change in town code that will allow town workers to forgive the $25 fine imposed when they pick up a loose dog, providing that the dog has a tag or some other identification that allows the town to find the owner.
The town board voted unanimously on Friday to change its code after dog control officer George Butts told them that, even though he has a chip reader and can instantly find a dog owner, state law forces him to impose the fee of $25, with an additional $15 for each additional 24-hour period, even though he can immediately bring a dog back to its owner.
Town attorney Laury Dowd said state law required town board approval to drop the fee.
