The Sheraton Long Island Hotel plans to expand with a second building next door to the existing hotel on Motor Parkway in Hauppauge.

The new 144-room hotel would be built in a parking lot east of the 209-room hotel, which was completed in 1981.

The Smithtown Town Board has scheduled a public hearing on the proposed hotel for Sept. 15 at the Eugene A. Cannataro Senior Citizen Center, 420 Middle Country Rd., Smithtown.

The new hotel would have fewer amenities than the existing hotel, which includes a convention center, an indoor pool, restaurants and a fitness center.

Town planning director Frank DeRubeis said the new building would be “a businessman’s hotel providing just the basic services.”

About 80 parking spaces would be displaced by the new structure, but the Sheraton has had more than enough parking since doubling the size of its parking lot in 1982, DeRubeis said.

A representative of Cameron Engineering of Woodbury, which submitted the proposal on the Sheraton’s behalf, could not be reached for comment.
