Shields strikes out a career-high 13
James Shields pitched a three-hitter with a career-high 13 strikeouts as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Florida Marlins, 4-0, yesterday in Miami to avoid a three-game sweep.
Shields (5-2) didn't allow a baserunner past first until the ninth and had nine strikeouts in the last four innings.
Red Sox 5, Cubs 1: Tim Wakefield held visiting Chicago to four hits in 62/3 innings and earned his 180th win for Boston, third in franchise history behind Cy Young and Roger Clemens. Adrian Gonzalez had four hits. Jarrod Saltalamacchia homered for the third time in the last four games he's played after going 121 at-bats without a homer. Gonzalez went 10-for-15 in the series.
The Cubs placed outfielder Marlon Byrd on the 15-day disabled list with multiple facial fractures after he was hit in the left eye by Boston's Alfredo Aceves on Saturday.
Rangers 2, Phillies 0: Matt Harrison took a five-hitter into the ninth as visiting Texas avoided a three-game sweep. The Phillies are expected to get Chase Utley back Monday. The Rangers' Josh Hamilton and Nelson Cruz are expected to be activated off the DL Monday.
Brewers 3, Rockies 1: Ryan Braun hit a two-run triple off Ubaldo Jimenez (0-4) -- who threw a two-hitter for visiting Colorado -- and scored on a throwing error as Milwaukee swept the series.
Orioles 2, Nationals 1: Vladimir Guerrero's two-run homer led host Baltimore.
White Sox 8, Dodgers 3: Alexei Ramirez homered and drove in a career-high five runs for host Chicago. Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier left with back, elbow and toe injuries after crashing into the fence.
Tigers 2, Pirates 0: Rick Porcello allowed one hit in eight innings in Pittsburgh.
Mariners 6, Padres 1: Felix Hernandez (5-4) tied his career high with 13 strikeouts in eight innings in San Diego.
Giants 5, Athletics 4: Emmanuel Burriss' walk-off single in the 11th lifted San Francisco.
Cardinals 9, Royals 8: Tim Collins walked two men with the bases loaded in the top of the 10th in Kansas City. Royals pitchers allowed 13 walks.
Astros 3, Blue Jays 2: Hunter Pence hit a two-run homer for visiting Houston.
Angels 4, Braves 1: Torii Hunter ended a home run drought of 28 games with a go-ahead shot off Derek Lowe for the host Angels.-- AP
