ShotSpotter unveiled in Hempstead in effort to curb gun violence

Hempstead residents are hoping a new computer system can help curb gun violence.

ShotSpotter, a technology that quickly pinpoints gunfire, is now being used in Hempstead. The system aims to get officers to crime scenes more quickly and to eventually lower crime rates.

Village officials have already installed cameras, flood lights and a 311 phone system to fight crime. They say they hope ShotSpotter will be another way to deter violence in the community.

Legislators Kevan Abraham and Robert Troiano helped get the $400,000 needed for ShotSpotter. The village hopes to use some of that money to install cameras at each ShotSpotter location.
