While walking around downtown Hicksville to run errands on Tuesday, Daniel Osorio said he felt unsafe. Not only were the sidewalks icy, but pedestrians crossing and walking down major multi-lane thoroughfares such as Newbridge Road could hardly access them.
“It’s a mess everywhere still,” Osorio, 25, of Bellport, said as he waited for a train at the Hicksville train station. “There’s still a lot of snow all over the sidewalk; you got to walk in the street. It’s not easy getting around right now at all … You have to walk side-by-side with the highway.”
Mounds of snow several feet high flanked cars parked alongside two-lane residential roads, such as East Marie Street. Other roads, such as West Marie Street, were bumpy and slippery due to a thin layer of snow, causing drivers to reduce their speeds.
