Smith missed team meeting before blowout to Chargers
Jets' quarterback Geno Smith missed a team meeting on Saturday night -- less than 24 hours before he and his teammates were embarrassed in a 31-0 loss in San Diego.
A team spokesman confirmed Smith's absence at the meeting, but called it an "honest mistake." The second-year QB was confused about the time because of the three-hour time zone difference in San Diego and arrived 5-10 minutes after it ended. He and several teammates had gone to see a movie. Smith was able to cover the material with offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg and QBs coach David Lee, the team said.
Per the team, Smith had never missed a team meeting before.
But the prep-time did little to help Smith on the field Sunday against the Chargers. He was 1-for-6 for 7 yards in the first quarter and finished 4-for-12 for 27 yards with an interception and a 7.6 rating before being yanked at halftime for veteran backup Michael Vick.
The move -- which came with the Jets trailing 21-0 -- mattered little. Vick was as much of a nonfactor as Smith behind porous pass protection from the offensive line.
After the game, linebacker Demario Davis took responsibility for the defensive lapses and also highlighted issues with the team's weekly preparation.
"Right now, we're not practicing like a championship football team," he said. "I don't see a lot of guys putting a lot of effort into film study."
The Jets (1-4) have now lost four straight games heading into Sunday's matchup with Peyton Manning and the Broncos. Smith will start that game, Ryan announced.
