The Smithtown Town board Tuesday approved a borrowing plan that includes funds for road repaving and improved lighting at the Hauppauge Industrial Park.

The $4.27 million package includes about $3 million to replenish Highway Department funds spent on superstorm Sandy cleanup, and $1.2 million on industrial park improvements. The borrowing plan was approved unanimously.

Industrial park officials have said that they average about one complaint a week from tenants and customers about potholes and poor lighting at the 1,400-acre site. The complex is home to 1,300 companies that employ 55,000 people and generate more than $19 million in annual tax revenue for Smithtown.

“The potholes absolutely cannot be repaired anymore,” said Terri Alessi-Miceli, president of the Hauppauge Industrial Association-Long Island, which represents businesses at the park. “They have to go curb-to-curb.”

Supervisor Patrick Vecchio said the repaving and lighting upgrade should begin by late summer.
