A member of the committee weighing a school closure has been appointed to the Smithtown Board of Education.

Christopher Alcure, 39, replaces Scott Martella, who resigned last month because of potential conflicts with his job as a liaison to Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo.

Alcure, a father of three who has worked in financial services for 17 years, was sworn in at Tuesday’s school board meeting. He said he plans to run in May for a full three-year term.

He has served on the citizens advisory committee, which is expected to recommend closing either Mills Pond Elementary School in St. James or Nesconset Elementary School. Alcure said Thursday in an email that he will step down from the committee “as it presents a conflict of interest.”

Smithtown plans to close a school next year because of reduced state aid and tax revenue, and declining enrollment.

“There’s a lot of big decisions ahead of us,” Alcure said Tuesday in an interview. “I want to make sure that the right decisions are made.”

Before Tuesday’s meeting, about 50 Mills Pond parents and students marched outside school district offices to oppose the school’s closing. They held pennants with the school’s name and signs such as, “Don’t get conned, save Mills Pond.”
