Smithtown East Showing its Muscle and Other Notes in Badminton
Smithtown East is proving their talent in Suffolk badminton.
Half Hollow Hills currently leads Suffolk girls’s badminton in League I, 6-0, 5-0 but Smithtown East is a looming threat at 5-1, 4-1. Neither team made it to the County Championship last year, yet the Thunder-Colts have had commanding wins against every team in the league, with two 8-1 wins and three 7-2 wins in six meets. Their closest competition thus far was against Whitman on April 13, where they edged out the 5-4 victory.
Hannah Singer has been a commanding player defeating Christina Mairns 11-5, 11-4 in first singles for the win. When the Thunder-Colts faced their toughest competition in Smithtown East on April 20, they proved unafraid and triumphed, 8-1. Singer defeated Julia Farrel, 11-4, 11-1, at first singles and Lauren Kiedaisch defeated Victoria Timmell, 11-4, 11-2 in fifth singles. Smithtown East refuses to relent and will host Half Hollow Hills in their second meeting on May 13.
Smithtown East boys are on their way to a second consecutive undefeated season, dominating Suffolk badminton, 6-0, 5-0. The Miller Place boys, an up-and-coming team, are not far behind, 5-1 in League I. The first match between the two teams on April 15 proved the talent of each team. Scott Bloechle defeated Nick Simoes 7-15, 15-8, 15-9 in the deciding match at No. 5 singles to give Smithtown East the 5-4 win. Half Hollow Hills 3-2, 2-2 in League I put up a good fight against the Bulls who took the marginal 5-4 win on April 20th. Smithtown East will host Miller Place in their second meeting on May 11th.
The Great Neck’s stand out in Nassau girls badminton.
Great Neck South has an impressive lead in Conference I. Differentiating themselves with a 7-2 record, they are incomparable to the second place team JFK Bellmore at 4-4. However, Bellmore JKF already stole their hopes for an undefeated season. In their first meeting on April 20th at Bellmore JFK, the home team took the 5-2 victory. Jenna Coluccio and Shelby Blane beat Henna Khanigou and Nancy Simon in second doubles, 21-18, 17-21, 22-20. The duo overcame a 3-point deficit in the third game to clinch the match.
