A committee that has recommended closing Nesconset Elementary School may complete its report to the Smithtown school board on Thursday.
The Citizens Advisory Committee on Instruction and Housing will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the school district’s offices at 26 New York Ave. The meeting is open to the public.
The committee hopes to complete a final draft of its report at Thursday’s meeting; the report is due to the school board on Jan. 31. The board expects to vote on Feb. 28 on whether to close Nesconset Elementary.
District officials say they need to close a school due to budget cuts and declining enrollment.
In addition to closing a school, the committee voted Jan. 5 to recommend moving district offices out of the New York Avenue building and to study the sale of vacant district-owned properties. Including members who were not present at the Jan. 5 meeting but submitted ballots by email, the committee voted, 21-6, in favor of closing Nesconset.
The committee will meet on Jan. 26 if it cannot complete its report at Thursday’s meeting.
