The Smithtown Special Library District’s vote on its 2014 proposed budget — which calls for less spending on books and more for online materials and services — and trustee election will be held today.

The $13.8 million budget plan is a 3.9 percent increase over this year’s approximately $13.3 million budget. The proposed budget includes about $520,000 more in spending.

Taxes would increase slightly by $6.74 on an average home whose annual taxes are assessed at $6,000.

The vote will be held from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the district’s four branch libraries.

Major budget changes include a nearly $471,500 increase in salaries and benefits for library employees and a more than $42,000 increase allocated for building and equipment repairs.

There are three candidates for three board of trustees seats. Trustees serve a three-year term in the unpaid position.

Incumbent Joseph A. Vallone, of Kings Park, a former insurance underwriting manager, said in a statement that he will “explore all avenues for grants through governmental agencies and private foundations.

Newcomer Gerard J. Cairns, of Kings Park, a retired middle and high school principal, said in a statement that he would like to add lighting for parking areas and increase community involvement.

Newcomer Diana L. Schilling-Held, of St. James, said in a statement that she would use her sales and marketing skills to “build awareness of resources that the library can provide.”
