Smithtown picks firm for Sandy debris work

Town of Smithtown officials Monday awarded two bids for grinding, transporting, and disposing of tree stumps remaining from superstorm Sandy and other debris totaling $318,000.
Smithtown town board members voted unanimously, with Councilman Kevin Malloy absent, to award All Island Excavating of St. James a bid for $210,000 to grind stumps at the Smithtown Highway Department’s Montclair Avenue Yard.
“These are all stumps that were pulled out from Hurricane Sandy,” said Supervisor Patrick Vecchio, adding that he estimated hundreds of tons of stumps would be ground.
All Island Excavating was the lowest responsive bidder, records show, beating out three others. TRS Construction was the second lowest, bidding $264,950.
Trinity Transportation Corp. of Islandia won its $108,000 bid to transport and dispose of “vegetative debris.” Trinity beat out one other company -- Reliable Wood Products -- that put in a bid for $208,5000, records show.
Vecchio said that the town will pay for the bids with money that has already been allocated.
“It was decided that the highway department could get $2 million worth of equipment by bonding,” he said.
Therefore, the $800,000 that had been previously budgeted for equipment purchase was split, said Vecchio, “$400,000 for light, small equipment and the other $400,000 for the cleanup of Montclair Avenue Yard.”
