A Smithtown man has won the right to name a new street after his late wife.

Maria Court — named after Maria Maloney, who died 15 years ago — will be built off Lincoln Avenue in the southeastern section of the hamlet, off Terry Road.

The Town of Smithtown traffic safety department had objected to the name Maria Court because street signs bearing a person’s first name tend to get stolen, town planning department officials said Wednesday at a meeting of the town planning board.

At the meeting John Maloney, said the name would honor the memory of his wife. The couple bought a 3-acre property on Lincoln Avenue 25 years ago and built their home there, he said.

“She actually found it, and I’d like to put her name on it,” Maloney said. “If they steal the sign, we’ll pay the money [for a new one].”
The planning board voted unanimously to let Maloney name the road Maria Court. It also approved Maloney’s proposal to subdivide his property and build three houses there.
