Smithtown school closure vote next month

The Smithtown School Board is scheduled to vote Feb. 28 on whether to close Nesconset Elementary School.
Closing the school, which is expected to save about $1 million in personnel expenses, is one of several cost-cutting moves contemplated by the district, which faces projected enrollment decreases over the next decade.
The school board is to receive by Jan. 31 a report from the Citizens Advisory Committee on Instruction and Housing, which last week recommended closing Nesconset. The committee also recommended moving administrative offices out of a building on New York Avenue in Smithtown and into other district buildings. The New York Avenue building could then be rented, the committee said.
The committee also said the district should study the possibility of selling undeveloped district-owned property.
The report will be discussed at a meeting of the school board and the advisory committee at 7 p.m. on Feb. 2, and a public hearing will be held at 7 p.m. on Feb. 15.
A vote on the committee’s recommendations was scheduled for an 8 p.m. meeting on Feb. 28.
