Smithtown should reconsider bus cuts

Why is it that a school district can have a revote if the budget isn't passed, and yet Smithtown schools Superintendent Edward Ehmann and the school board refuse to revisit the reductions of school bus transportation ["Smithtown: Left in the lurch," News, June 7]?
He states that it will save the district about $800,000, enough to save the jobs of 10 teachers. What is the life of a child worth, walking down Route 25A or Route 111, with no sidewalks in the middle of winter with a 15-pound backpack filled with books?
Give the voting public of the Smithtown school district another chance to vote for the school buses. I challenge Ehmann and the school board to walk down 25A, Route 111, or to try to cross Route 347 at the height of rush hour on any given school day. Better still, let's wait until we have rain and snow. I suspect they would opt for a ride.
