The Stony Brook School is, if you'll excuse the pun, making waves.

(And no, I don't actually expect anyone to excuse that pun. I'm terribly sorry.)

The Stony Brook varsity Division A and B squad came in first in (wait for it) the Mid-Atlantic Scholastic Sailing Association Northeastern League 2010 Fall Double Handed Fleet Racing Qualifier and Championship Regatta. Long title for a tidy accomplishment. The combined scores "rank the league for the season and determine the order of selection for the district fall championship in Virginia," per a release from George Linzee, director of MASSA.

Mamaroneck High School came in first in Division A, while Stony Brook took second, with one first place finish in the four-race format. In Division B, Stony Brook finished behind the Saint Ann's School, coming in first in the third race. The combined scores were enough to earn the school the top spot. Bellport came in third in Division A, while Harborfields took fifth, St. Anthony's grabbed seventh, St. John the Baptist came in eighth and Bay Shore came in ninth.

Long Island teams fared well in the B Division: Harborfields (third), Bellport (fourth), Baptist (sixth), Bay Shore (eighth) and St. Anthony's (ninth).

Because of the way the championship is formatted, only the first place team of this regatta is guaranteed a berth, though it's likely the top three or four teams will attend, per Linzee.

For those keeping track at home, those three teams (A and B combined) are: Stony Brook, Saint Ann's and Mamaroneck, with Bellport and Harborfields nipping at their heels.
