Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman is urging residents to stay safe during the snowstorm — and, unless it’s an emergency, to stay home.

“If you must go out, drive carefully, slow down and stay alert,” Blakeman said in a statement Friday. “Nassau County is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents during extreme weather conditions.”

Nassau's Office of Emergency Management has more than 70 plows and 100 pieces of equipment operating to keep the roads and highways clear, he said.

Residents are also encouraged to check on their neighbors, friends and family to make sure they’re not in need. They were also asked to shovel sidewalks, to clear snow from around fire hydrants and to move vehicles into a driveway to make it easier for plows to operate.
