Babylon Town workers Kenny McGowan and Jason Koza were out plowing Monday when they spotted two dogs running down the median of Sunrise Highway near North Delaware Avenue.

With the help of some good Samaritans, the workers were able to get the dogs into their truck and over to the Babylon Animal Shelter. There, workers found one of the dogs was microchipped, and they eventually located their owners, Babylon Town spokesman Ryan Bonner said.

Bonner said the town had 145 workers with 115 plows out on the roads Monday.

The dense, heavy snow was creating equipment challenges, he wrote in a text, including increased wear and tear on plow blades and vehicles becoming stuck in the snow.

Bonner said workers will remain out “around the clock” and estimates snow removal to take at least 48 hours in order for roads to be “passable.” Beyond that, he said snow clearing will extend well into the weekend and likely into next week.
