Family Service League, an 86-year-old social services organization based in Huntington, and Family Counseling Services of Westhampton Beach are merging, the agencies announced Monday.

Family Counseling — which also has offices in Shirley and East Yaphank and provides counseling, substance abuse treatment and other services to 6,000 clients a year — will become a division of the larger Family Service League, which has 15 sites in Suffolk County and serves 47,000 clients a year on a wide range of issues, including homelessness, mental health, and education. Karen Boorshtein, Family Service League’s president and chief executive, will lead the merged organization, while Family Counseling Services’ executive director Judith Margolis will continue to work with the group.

This wasn’t the first talk of merging for Family Service League. In 2010, it briefly entertained the idea of merging with Family and Children’s Association, a similarly-sized organization based in Mineola, but the two groups dropped the notion after deciding it wasn’t a good fit.
