Softballin': Players of the Week

Suffolk Player of the Week: Chelsea Hawks, Shoreham-Wading River: Quite a week for “The Hawk.” It began with a five-inning no-hitter with 13 strikeouts in a 15-0 win over Southampton, the second no-no of her career. It continued with a 5-1 win over Bayport-Blue Point in which she struck out 20 batters, including the 501st of her career to become the program’s all-time leader in strikeouts. It concluded with a two-hit, 15-strikeout performance in a 2-0 win over Mattituck. Totals for the week: 3-0, one run, six hits, 48 K’s.
Nassau Player of the Week: Kerri Shapiro, East Meadow: The junior pitcher picked herself up with her bat, hitting the go-ahead two-run home run in a 10-6 win over MacArthur, in a rematch of last season’s county championship. She then did damage with her arm, tossing a one-hitter and striking out a career-high 17 batters in a 1-0 win over Long Beach.
Kaitlyn Delaney, Hicksville: Went 5-for-5 with a career high six RBIs in a 16-8 win over Baldwin.
Angela Schuler, Connetquot: Hit for the cycle in a 16-5 win over Half Hollow Hills East.
Samantha Van Dorn, Patchogue-Medford: Tossed a no-hitter, struck out 10, and hit a grand slam in a 12-0 win over Ward Melville.
Sydney Witowski, Malverne: Went 4-for-4 with eight RBIs, including two homers and a triple, in a 19-7 win over Wheatley.
Kirstin Cox and Angelica Gargiulo, Clarke: …and all of the Clarke girls who contributed to a two-out, six-run comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning of a 13-12 win over Oceanside. Gargiulo knocked in the tying run in the seventh as Clarke erased a 12-6 deficit and Cox hit a walk-off single in the eighth.
