An Island Park solar energy company is holding a competition for Long Island and New York City high school students, with the winners traveling to the Palace of Versailles in Paris.

Participants will compete for a spot at Solar Decathlon Europe 2014, an international solar energy competition that takes place at Versailles in June and July. EmPower Solar of Island Park is collecting entries from Long Island and New York City high school students.

“This year the competition will include a written component where students will evaluate the energy consumption and solar potential of a house or building of their choosing,” company officials said in a statement. “They are also required to produce a YouTube video on why the guest judges should pick them to join EmPower Solar in France.”

Guest judges and partners include Citizens Campaign for the Environment, the Cradle of Aviation Museum and Hempstead Town, according to the statement.

Information about how to participate in the competition is available online at www.empower-solar.com/overview/empower-solar-student-competition.
