Regarding "Donated kidneys and difficult decisions" [Editorial, March 1], I think you had the right idea that the shortage of kidneys is the problem. But there are solutions other than making do with the current supply.

In some European countries, people become automatic donors at death unless they opt out. We could also try some form of financial incentive for donors.

We could better inform people about how to become a living donor, and give preference to them if they eventually need a transplant. We could share organs across state lines so that there is not such a long wait in some states compared to others.

These are just a few of the things that should be looked at instead of rationing.
