Source: Chiefs interview Andy Reid for coaching opening
The Chiefs were courting former Eagles coach Andy Reid yesterday as a replacement for Romeo Crennel, who was fired Monday after a 2-14 season, the worst in franchise history.
Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt was meeting with Reid in Philadelphia, a person familiar with Reid's plans told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the plans were not made public. ESPN.com first reported the interview would take place.
Reid, fired after 14 seasons in Philadelphia, also planned to interview for the job in Arizona. The Cardinals dismissed Ken Whisenhunt on Monday.
The Chiefs have a connection with Reid through team president Mark Donovan, who spent the previous six years as the Eagles' senior vice president of business operations.
Hunt interviewed Falcons offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter Tuesday. But Falcons coach Mike Smith said yesterday that Koetter had signed a new contract and would not be pursuing a head-coaching job this season.
Hunt said he, and not embattled general manager Scott Pioli, would lead the coaching search.
Cards' Horton popular guy
The Cardinals and Browns have interviewed Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton. Cardinals president Michael Bidwill identified Horton, Reid and Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy as candidates to replace Whisenhunt. Horton said he also would speak to Bills officials about their coaching job.
Browns like Ducks' Kelly
The Browns apparently have Oregon coach Chip Kelly near the top of their list of candidates to replace Pat Shurmur. Browns CEO Joe Banner reportedly is in Arizona and intends to interview Kelly, who is preparing the Ducks there for tonight's Fiesta Bowl against Kansas State.
