Southampton Hospital is the only small rural hospital in New York State selected by the Hospital and Health Networks — a publication of the American Hospital Association — to be included on its list of “most wired hospitals and health systems.”

The designation, based on a survey of practices of hospitals across the country, reflects efforts at Southampton Hospital to computerize patient treatment data, pharmaceutical records and other important health care information.

The data network also extends to free-standing medical practices that are affiliated with Southampton Hospital.

Other larger Long Island hospitals -- North Shore in Manhasset, Stony Brook University Hospital and Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola -- are named in a separate “most wired” list.

To select its hospitals, the publication conducted an online survey, and 662 hospitals responded.

The survey included topics ranging from clinical quality and safety to business and administrative management and infrastructure, including security technology safeguards.
