Southampton to weigh trucks ban on Noyac Road

Southampton Town will hold a public hearing to discuss banning some commercial vehicles from Noyac Road.

The initial discussion will center on whether to ban all trucks more than 10,000 pounds from using Noyac Road and connecting arteries with a few exceptions, including school buses, trucks delivering merchandise to homeowners in the area, homeowners’ own vehicles, motor coaches and charger buses used for local touring or transportation to train stations, agricultural vehicles and municipally-owned vehicles.

Residents who live along Noyac Road spoke mostly in favor of the initiative, some saying that the design of the road with its rises and falls makes trucks more difficult to see and the road more dangerous to walk. Others said noise from trucks can be very loud, disturbing them inside their homes.

The town needs to analyze all of its roads, Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst said, to find designated routes for trucks.

The public hearing will be held April 24 at 6 p.m. at Town Hall, 116 Hampton Rd., Southampton.
