The Peconic Bay Power Squadron, the East End unit of the United States Power Squadrons boating safety organization, will participate May 19 in an international attempt to break a world record for the most life jackets worn at one time.

The group will mark the start of National Safe Boating Week by participating in the “Ready, Set, Wear It!” event at 11 a.m. at Port of Egypt marina at 62300 Main Rd. in Southold.

The worldwide event designed to raise boating safety awareness and promote use of life jackets is sponsored by the National Safe Boating Council and the Canadian Safe Boating Council, with support from allied organizations including the United States Power Squadrons. Last year, 1,685 people wore life jackets in the United States, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Japan and the United Kingdom.

Participants will be able to learn about lifejacket options and try inflating the modern lightweight suspender-style jackets.
