Southold Police Chief Carlisle E. Cochran Jr. announced his retirement to the Town Toard after more than 40 years with the town. He will retire effective July 5.

"I was quite surprised," said Southold Town Supervisor Scott Russell. "I'm sorry to see him go, but I wish him the best."

In addition to accepting Cochran's resignation, the board also:

* Approved $130,000 for emergency restoration of sand at town beaches and to fix the parking lot at Town Beach on North Road;

* Approved a public hearing on a new noise ordinance for the town;

* Issued a fireworks permit to the Greenport Fire Department's Star Hose Company for May 27 and 29;

* Approved a public hearing on land preservation acquisitions of 35 acres of land at 32210 Main Rd. in Orient owned by Frederick Terry and Ethel Terry revocable trusts for $86,000 per acre;

* Approved an accounting of debt associated with the town's community preservation fund totaling $9.89 million;

* Approved a four-year agreement with the North Fork Animal Welfare League Inc. to run its animal shelter for annual amounts of: $205,000 in 2011/2012; $211,150 in 2012/2013; $217,484 in 2013/2014; $217,484 in 2014/2015;

* And approved the hiring of 32 seasonal workers, including lifeguards, recreational attendants and water safety instructors.
