SPCA sponsors free rabies vaccine clinic in Islip Town

Long Islanders whose dogs, cats or ferrets are due for their rabies shots can get them for free — or for a small donation — Saturday outside Islip Town Hall.

The annual free vaccination event, sponsored by the Suffolk County SPCA, draws anywhere from five to 500 pets each year, an Islip Town spokeswoman said, and will be held rain or shine.

This year, the Islip Animal Shelter will also be on hand to microchip pets for a $25 fee, and Town Clerk Olga Murray will be available to license pets who live in Islip Town.

For spayed or neutered pets, the licensing fee is $6, the town said. For pets who are not spayed or neutered, the cost is $13.

Only dogs, cats and ferrets ages 4 months and older are eligible for rabies vaccinations Saturday, town officials said. And while the service is free, a donation of $10 is suggested.

The event will take place in front of Town Hall, 655 Main St., from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
