Speonk groundwater pollution study to be explained by Department of Environmental Conservation officials

State environmental officials will hold a public meeting next Wednesday to give people in the Speonk area the results of a two-year study into a 2-mile-long plume of groundwater pollution that, officials say, originated at a former lumber yard on Speonk-Riverhead Road.

The Department of Environmental Conservation began a $5 million cleanup of the area around the former Best Building Supply and Lumber Company in 2010, and began an extensive study to determine how far the pollution plume had spread.

State officials say the plume is at depths from 25 to 115 feet below the surface of the ground, and is moving from north to south.

The meeting will be from 7 to 9 p.m. in Room S-101 of the Shinnecock Building at the eastern campus of Suffolk County Community College, 121 Speonk-Riverhead Rd. Officials from both the DEC and the state health department will attend.
