Messi breaks Mueller's goal mark
Lionel Messi broke German great Gerd Mueller's 40-year-old record for goals in a year by scoring for the 86th time in 2012. The forward from Argentina put in two Sunday to lead Barcelona to a 2-1 win at Real Betis in a Spanish league match.
His first was an individual effort in the 16th minute to equal Mueller's mark, and he eclipsed the 1972 milestone nine minutes later.
Indiana wins eighth NCAA title
Nikita Kotlov scored midway through the second half to give Indiana a 1-0 victory over Georgetown to win the NCAA championship in Hoover, Ala. It is the eighth crown for the Hoosiers (16-5-3).
Clippers win sixth in a row
The Clippers extended their winning streak to six with a 102-83 victory over Toronto, the Raptors' 10th consecutive road loss . . . The Jazz beat the host Lakers, 117-110, despite 34 points by Kobe Bryant. The Lakers are 4-7 in the last 11 games.COLLEGE HOOPS
Hofstra women lose to Auburn
Anma Onyeuku scored a career-high 21 points for Hofstra (1-7) in a 68-58 loss at Auburn (6-2). Shante Evans had 16 rebounds for the Pride, which has lost seven in a row . . . DeAndra Scott had 26 points and 15 rebounds as Old Westbury (3-4) defeated host St. Elizabeth (N.J.), 85-71.
