Griner attacked in China

WNBA star Brittney Griner was cut on the elbow by a man in a knife attack in China but didn't need to go to the hospital, her agent told The Associated Press yesterday. Agent Lindsay Kagawa Colas said Griner sustained a small cut as her team was boarding a bus after practice Monday in what she called a random attack. Colas said the man was yelling as he chased the players onto the bus. She said he left the scene, and then returned covered in blood and was apprehended by Chinese authorities. It was not immediately clear in which city this happened.

This is Griner's second season in China and first with the Beijing Great Wall. Griner played last night against Liaoning Hengye and had 19 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks. Colas said the 6-8 player was wearing a winter coat and that the knife barely cut her skin.

NASCARBrad, Jeff avoid penalty

Brad Keselowski and Jeff Gordon avoided any penalty from NASCAR yesterday for their post-race fight at Texas Motor Speedway. Two crew chiefs and four crew members from Hendrick Motorsports were punished for their roles in the brawl. NASCAR suspended three Hendrick crew members for six races for being "involved in a post-race physical altercation" and fined them each $25,000. A fourth Hendrick crew member was fined $10,000 and suspended for three races.

Two from UConn cited

Connecticut's Breanna Stewart and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis are in a class by themselves. They are the first teammates to twice be honored as preseason All-Americans by The Associated Press. The two are joined on the team by Notre Dame's Jewell Loyd, Duke's Elizabeth Williams and South Carolina's Tiffany Mitchell. -- AP
