COLLEGES
Sanctions against Miami
Miami's football team will lose a total of nine scholarships and the men's basketball team will lose three, as part of the penalties the school was handed yesterday by the NCAA as the Nevin Shapiro scandal presumably drew to a close. Both of those scholarship losses will be stretched out over three years. But for the first time since 2010, the football team will be permitted to appear in a postseason game. "It's relief that we finally have a decision," Miami president Donna Shalala said. " . . . But I don't have any anger or frustration." The school also will serve three years of probation. Former men's basketball coach Frank Haith, now at Missouri, will sit out the first five games of his team's upcoming season as punishment for his involvement with the former booster, and three former Miami football and basketball assistant coaches were handed two-year bans. -- AP
NCC names Osovet
Nassau Community College named offensive coordinator Joe Osovet interim football coach, spokesman Chuck Cutolo said. Osovet replaced Curtis Gilliam, who Cutolo said resigned for personal reasons. Osovet, 41, was an All-Long Island defensive back at Babylon High School who attended Nassau for two years before transferring to Northeastern. No. 17 Nassau is 7-1 and in contention to win the Northeast Football Conference.
SOCCERBarca, Milan tie
Lionel Messi preserved Barcelona's unbeaten start in the Champions League by equalizing in a 1-1 draw at AC Milan, while Arsenal lost 2-1 at home to Borussia Dortmund in the other marquee match. Messi scored from close range to cancel out Robinho's opener. Robert Lewandowski grabbed an 82nd-minute winner for Dortmund at Arsenal. Chelsea beat Schalke, 3-0, with striker Fernando Torres scoring twice. -- AP
