Algieri fight at Barclays

Greenlawn's Chris Algieri, a former WBO junior welterweight champion, returns to the Barclays Center ring for the first time since losing to Amir Khan in May when he takes on Ecuador's Erick Bone in a fight on Dec. 5. Brooklyn natives Daniel Jacobs and Peter Quillin headline the card in their hometown. Algieri is 20-2 with eight knockouts in his career.

Algieri, 31, defeated Mike Arnaoutis and Emmanuel Taylor en route to his upset title win over Ruslan Provodnikov in June 2014 when he rose to fame. The win over Provodnikov landed him a fight against Manny Pacquiao last November, but the 36-year-old was too much for him to handle. COLLEGES

Epilepsy forces coach out

Minnesota football coach Jerry Kill stepped down yesterday because of continued issues with his epilepsy after rebuilding a failing program into a solid, if not spectacular, winner. Kill, 54, has been Minnesota's coach since 2010. He has epilepsy, and told reporters he attended practice Tuesday after suffering two seizures. "I don't want to be a liability," Kill said. "I don't want somebody to have to worry about if I'm going to drop on the field. I don't want to coach from the press box. I want to coach the way I coached my whole life. I don't have any more energy. None. I've left it all here in the great state of Minnesota. And I have no regrets." Kill had a career record of 156-102 as a head coach, 29-29 at Minnesota. Tracy Claeys, the defensive coordinator, will be interim coach.

Canadiens' streak ends

Jared McCann scored twice and Ryan Miller made 25 saves as the Vancouver Canucks beat Montreal 5-1 on Tuesday night to hand the Canadiens their first loss of the season. Montreal (9-1-0) had set an NHL record with nine straight regulation wins to start the year, and was one victory from tying the best start in league history set by the 1993-94 Toronto Maple Leafs and the 2006-07 Buffalo Sabres. -- AP
