Newton questionable
Panthers Pro Bowl quarterback Cam Newton, suffering from fractured ribs, threw passes and took all of his anticipated reps at practice with the first team yesterday, raising hope that he might play tomorrow at Tampa Bay. Newton, who still is listed as questionable, has never missed a start in three seasons for Carolina . . . The Packers don't think a left knee injury suffered by right tackle Bryan Bulaga Thursday night against the Seahawks will be a major setback.

Garcia atop BMW field
Sergio Garcia shot a 6-under-par 64 to take a one-shot lead over Ryan Palmer (64) after the second round at the PGA Tour's BMW Championship in Englewood, Colorado. Rory McIlroy shot 67 and was two shots behind, along with Billy Horschel (66). The BMW is the third of four events in the tour playoffs for the FedEx Cup.
Ramsay leads Euro Masters
Richie Ramsay shot a 4-under 66 to lead Ryder Cup rookie Jamie Donaldson (64) by one stroke after the second round of the European Masters in Crans-Montana, Switzerland . . . Chip Beck eagled the par-5 18th hole for a 7-under 65 and a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Champions Tour's Quebec Championship. -- APMMA

Wantagh's Al Iaquinta scored a third-round knockout of Rodrigo Damm at UFC Fight Night 50 at Foxwoods in Connecticut. Iaquinta is 9-3-1, 4-2 UFC.

Belmont winner retires
Dogwood Stable announced the retirement of 2013 Belmont Stakes winner Palace Malice after a veterinary examination found a deep bone bruise in his left hind leg. The 4-year-old colt was 4-for-4 in 2014 and the leading contender for Horse of the Year before finishing sixth as the odds-on favorite Aug. 2 in the Whitney Stakes at Saratoga.
