SBU's Maysonet named FCS All-American
After reaching the second round of the FCS playoffs two years in a row, Stony Brook's football program is beginning to reap national recognition. Running back Miguel Maysonet was named to the AFCA FCS All-America team yesterday, and Chuck Priore was named regional co-coach of the year. Maysonet finished his senior season with 1,964 yards rushing and he scored 23 touchdowns. One of three finalists for the Walter Payton Award as the outstanding player in FCS football, Maysonet had nine games with at least 100 yards rushing during the Seawolves' 10-3 campaign, including three games in which he topped the 200-yard mark. Maysonet had 220 yards in SBU's first-ever victory over an FBS school at Army and topped that with a career-high 233 in a win over Big South tri-champion Coastal Carolina. The two-time Big South Conference offensive player of the year owns school and conference records for career rushing yards (4,725), yards per game (127.7) and touchdowns (53). Priore shared the regional coaching award with Bethune-Cookman's Brian Jenkins. Stony Brook's 10 wins was a first in school history, and the Seawolves won at least a share of the Big South title for the fourth straight season.
Wisconsin's Bielema headed to Arkansas
Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema has agreed to become the new coach at Arkansas, according to a person familiar with the situation. Arkansas brought in John L. Smith after firing Bobby Petrino this year after he hired his mistress to work in the football department. Arkansas went 4-8 this season and it was announced that Smith would not return . . . Auburn has hired Gus Malzahn as head coach. Malzahn had coached at Arkansas State . . . Steve Addazio has left Temple to coach Boston College.
Wizards come up with magic to beat Heat
The Washington Wizards doubled their victory total this season with a 105-101 win over the visiting Miami Heat last night despite LeBron James' triple-double of 26 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists. Jordan Crawford led Washington with 22 points, including three late free throws, and James missed a potential tying three-pointer with 3.9 seconds to go.
Steelers CB Taylor out with broken ankle
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said cornerback Ike Taylor's 135-game streak will end after Taylor suffered a fractured right ankle in Sunday's 23-20 win over Baltimore . . . Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher told Fox Chicago that he could miss the rest of the regular season after suffering a hamstring injury on Sunday . . . Washington Redskins cornerback Cedric Griffin has been suspended four games without pay for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances. -- AP
